Finding the Perfect Internship & Landing It

A Little About Me

I feel very lucky to have been selected as an intern for Grand Slam Social (GSS). Working for a social media company has been such a great experience. As a Junior at the University of Kentucky, I wanted to find an internship that gave me insight into the world of technology. I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Information Communication Technology (ICT) degree and while I certainly have a passion for Information Technology (IT) work, I also have a love for horses, Thoroughbreds in particular. Finding an internship that allowed me to continue learning about both IT and Thoroughbreds was unexpected and then I found GSS. After researching the company, it seemed like I would be a great fit for them.

Know Your Strengths

When looking for an internship, it is important to understand your strengths and weaknesses to determine whether or not a company will be a good fit for you. Employees from GSS work remotely, and although I didn’t have any experience doing remote work, I am self-sufficient and have very good time management skills. It’s difficult to sell yourself if you’re not confident in your abilities. I also knew that my education and background in technology made me a good candidate to work in social media. Finally, I am very familiar with horses and the thoroughbred industry, so I knew I could speak the language and work well with our clientbase. Although Grand Slam had not publicly promoted an internship, I was certain that I would be successful there as an intern and emailed to inquire. Don’t be afraid to ask about a position; if I hadn’t reached out, I wouldn’t be working for them today.

Know Your Values and the Company Values

During the interview process, I spoke to several people that I would be working with and was able to see how my values would align with the company. GSS goes above and beyond to provide exceptional customer service and always looks for creative ways to improve their business model. As an innovative person, I felt that my ideas would be welcomed by a company that aspires to continuous improvement. I appreciated having the opportunity to speak directly with the people I would be working with. For me, the founders of the company taking the time to talk to a potential intern spoke volumes about the kind of people I would be working with. After a few rounds of interviews and speaking to several different members of the team, I knew my ideas could add value to the company and that I would work well with the team.

My education at UK and my ability to articulate what I have learned solidified the position for me, and I knew I would be a good addition to the team. Once you find the perfect fit, apply for the job, use your skills, and be the best intern you can possibly be!
